Following an embarrassing night that saw England players suffer racist abuse in a UEFA European Championship qualifier, president of the Bulgaria Football Union Borislav Mihaylov has resigned.
England colored players and coaching staff were subjected to racist chants by the Bulgarian fans with the game halted on a number of occasions to warn the fans. Mihaylov came under fire with Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, calling for him to step down and threatening to withhold government funding.
A statement from the Bulgaria Football Union confirmed the resignation of Mihaylov, "Today, the president of the Bulgarian football association, Borislav Mihailov, handed in his resignation, which will be presented in front of the members of the executive committee at the meeting on Friday.
"His decision is a consequence of the tensions caused in recent days; an environment, which is damaging to Bulgarian football and to the Bulgarian football association. After many years spent in this position, and with the numerous international contacts, Mr. Mihailov expresses his categorical readiness to continue helping the development of Bulgarian football in any way."
The Prime Minister on his official twitter handed strongly condemned the act, "It is unacceptable for Bulgaria, which is one of the most tolerant countries in the world, and people of different ethnicity and religions live in peace, to be associated with racism and xenophobia."
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, also commented on the issue blaming the rise of nationalism in Europe, "Believe me, UEFA is committed to doing everything it can to eliminate this disease from football. We cannot afford to be content with this; we must always strive to strengthen our resolve.
"More broadly, the football family -- everyone from administrators to players, coaches and fans -- needs to work with governments and NGOs to wage war on the racists and to marginalize their abhorrent views to the fringes of society.
"Football associations themselves cannot solve this problem. Governments too need to do more in this area. Only by working together in the name of decency and honor will we make progress."
England went on to win the game 6-0 with Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley bagging braces as Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford added their names on the scoresheet.
I strongly condemn the conduct of some of the fans at the stadium #BULENG It is unacceptable that Bulgaria which is one of the most tolerant states in the world and where people of different ethnic and religious background peacefully live together should be associated with racism— Boyko Borissov (@BoykoBorissov) October 15, 2019
