☄️ Five classic clashes between the two most successful teams in English football history

Old Trafford plays host to Manchester United vs Liverpool this Sunday, and it's a date that supporters of both clubs always look for when the fixtures are announced at the start of any new season.

With 38 league titles between them, the two most successful teams in English history have produced many memorable matches. Here are five such matches.

🗓 4 January 1994

Liverpool 3-3 Man United

Sir Alex Ferguson's Man United side found themselves 3-0 up after only 23 minutes thanks to a Steve Bruce header, a lovely chip from Ryan Giggs and a trademark free-kick from set-piece specialist Denis Irwin. Nigel Clough's double before the break kept Liverpool hopes alive and Neil Ruddock completed a classic Anfield comeback with 11 minutes left on the clock.

🗓 14 March 2009

Man United 1-4 Liverpool

It was a match featuring a few unlikely goal-scorers and one that revived Liverpool's slim title hopes. Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead from the penalty spot but Fernando Torres levelled matters and it was 1-1 on 30 minutes. Reds skipper Steven Gerrard put Liverpool ahead just before the break and kissed the camera in trademark fashion, and matters got worse for United as centre back Nemanja Vidic was red-carded for a professional foul.

Rafa Benitez's Liverpool charges added two more memorable left-footed goals through Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena to hand the Old Trafford club their biggest home defeat in 17 years. The Red Devils still went on to win the title, however.

🗓 19 September 2010

Man United 3-2 Liverpool

The sublime yet unpredictable talent of Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov was never on show consistently at Old Trafford, but his hat-trick against Liverpool in 2010 was undoubtedly his best game in a red United shirt.

His stunning overhead kick on the hour, added to his opener just before half time, had Roy Hodgson's Liverpool side reeling. Steven Gerrard, so often the Liverpool hero, scored a brace to bring them back into the contest with a penalty and a curling free-kick, but Berbatov had the final say six minutes from time.

🗓 16 March 2014

Man United 0-3 Liverpool

Liverpool's last win at Old Trafford in the Premier League was a convincing one and a real statement of intent. The visitors were handed three penalties in one of the most one-sided clashes ever between these fierce rivals. Steven Gerrard slotted the first two of those but struck the post with his third. That mattered little, as Nemanja Vidic was sent off with 13 minutes of the contest remaining, it was his fourth career red card against Liverpool. Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez made it 3-0 late on, sealing the points for the visitors.

🗓 15 September 2015

Man United 3-1 Liverpool

This match will be remembered for two sublime goals. United found themselves cruising at 2-0 with 84 minutes on the clock when Christian Benteke scored spectacularly with a bicycle kick but it proved to be a mere consolation for the Reds. Anthony Martial, on debut for Man United, clinched the three points with a beautiful weaving run after his big-money move that made him the most expensive teenager in history, at the time.
