The Telkom Knockout is back! Just 10 months since Baroka FC upset Orlando Pirates in 2018’s final in PE, the tournament returns this weekend and isukile!
Check out five things as the TKO returns...
Last season’s heroes
A mere run into the quarter-finals or last four would have been special enough, but going all the way to defeat a superb Pirates side in Port Elizabeth was remarkable for Baroka FC. The feat was achieved in the club’s first ever cup final since gaining promotion to the PSL in 2016/17.
Key men: Elvis Chipezeze, Mduduzi Mdantsane, Jemondre Dickens and coach Wedson Nyirenda.
Under the Telkom Knockout name, this tournament has had eight editions since 2010. Amazingly, no side has ever won it more than once.
Some special finals include Mamelodi Sundowns outclassing Kaizer Chiefs in Durban during 2015. Remember that cloudy day where Khama Billiat combined with Leonardo Castro to destroy Amakhosi? There was also of course Hlompo Kekana’s cracker via a Themba Zwane back-heel assist. While Denis Onyango also had a stunning night eThekwini with two penalty saves in the second half.
New PSL outfit Stellenbosch FC will make their TKO final - and it’s against the might Bucs in Soweto!
