Top performers: Five African players who starred in Champions League match-day three

The UEFA Champions League match-day three did not disappoint, as it treated football fans to total soccer ecstasy.

Tuesday was perhaps one of the most entertaining night in group action in recent seasons, as a total of 30 goals were scored on the night.

Two hat-tricks, six braces and a total of 30 goals summed up the night, before another 24 were added on Wednesday night to bring to a total of 54 from 16 matches.

Raheem Sterling, Kylian Mbappe, Alex Chamberlain and Paolo Dybala were perhaps the stars of match-day three, even though there were other top performers.

African players plying their trade in Europe were not left behind either, with assured performances for their teams.

1. Thomas Partey (Atletico vs Leverkusen)

Partey starred as his Atletico Madrid side pipped Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 on Tuesday night to move up to second on the group, level on points with leaders Juventus

The midfield engine has been one of the star performers for the Spanish side this season, and he put in another solid performance in the 90-minute period he played.

2. Serge Aurier (Spurs vs Zvezda)

The Ivory Coast international was in the starting lineup as Tottenham Hotspur put their recent struggles behind them to record their biggest Champions League win ever in a 5-0 demolition of Red Star Belgrade.

The 26-year-old put in an assured performance and had a hand in three goals on the night. He has been under a lot of pressure lately because of his performances, but after shining in the European stage, he can comfortably walk with his head high.

3. Kwadwo Asamoah (Inter Milan vs Borussia Dortmund)

Asamoah's position in the Inter team is a bit unclear, but on Wednesday night, Antonio Conte played him in an advanced midfield role to a great effect.

For the better part of the 80 minutes on the pitch, Asamoah was one of the best players as he led his side to a first win in Europe this campaign with a clinical 2-0 victory.

4. Riyad Mahrez (Man City vs Atalanta)

The Algerian continues to be one of the key men for Pep Guardiola's side this campaign, and he put in another stellar performance in their comeback victory against Italian side Atalanta on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old provided an assist for one of Raheem Sterling's goal and was generally a constant threat on the wing for the hosts.

5. Percy Tau (Brugge vs PSG)

Tau's Club Brugge got a footballing lesson in a 5-0 loss at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night. But despite the heavy defeat, the South African was one of the top performers for his side, at least according to the stats.

He covered 15.2 km through the match and had two key passes and four crosses through the match. His pass accuracy too was way above average, rated at 76%.

Focus now shifts to local matches this weekend across Europe's top leagues.
