Manchester City cruised to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup following a 3-1 win over Southampton with Sergio Aguero bagging a brace.
City were looking to continue with their title defense after winning every domestic cup last season while Southampton were out to make amends after their 9-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City. Pep Guardiola's men enjoyed the lion's share of possession but the Saints were well-organized.
After one way traffic for City in the opening minutes, they finally broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when a corner was played short, Bernardo Silva chipped in a cross from the corner of the area as Otamendi rose highest to head in from five yards.
Pep Guardiola's men doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Kyle Walker delivered a low cross into the box that fell to Sergio Aguero to tap home from close range as they went into the half time break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The Argentines continued to dominate the scoresheet as Sergio Aguero bagged his brace in the 56th minute when Mahrez’s 30-yarder hit a defender, looped up and dropped onto Aguero’s foot six yards out and got the slightest of touches to guide the ball home.
Southampton showed some fight in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts in the 75th minute when James Word-Prowse whipped in a corner to the far post that was headed in by Jack Stevens for his first goal this season.
City held on for the 3-1 win and will again face Southampton in the English Premier League on Saturday 2nd November at the Etihad Stadium.
