Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has been dropped from the England squad after a burst up with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
The duo had clashed over the weekend following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over City and the UK media reports that Sterling couldn’t take on a banter thrown at him by the defender. Sterling is said to have grabbed Gomez by the neck in a training ground bust-up on Monday.
The bust-up is said to have left the England squad shocked after what was initially a playful back-and-forth quickly escalated into a physical confrontation between the two standouts.
The omission means Sterling who has been one of England’s best performers will miss the country’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.
During Sunday’s match, Gomez, who was introduced as a very late substitute, shoved Sterling in the chest after the much shorter winger had backed into the Liverpool defender.
The City talisman then retaliated, which required the two to be separated by team-mates, including James Milner.
England lead Group A by three points and need just two points to ensure Euro 2020 qualification with just the matches against Montenegro and Kosovo left to play.
