Jordan Ayew’s goal helped Ghana to claim three points against Sao Tome & Principe in today’s AFCON 2021 qualifier.
Ghana’s win away at Sao Tome marked six points in two games to take top position in Group C. The win follows after a 2-0 win over South Africa in last Thursday’s matchday one game.
Ayew's second half penalty was enough in what was widely described as a difficult, narrow astro turf pitch. The home side thus started brightly before the Black Stars quickly took control of the game.
Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey nearly put in Jordan Ayew for the opener but Sao Tome goalkeeper made the save. Samuel Owusu later hit a dangerous shot that rebounded to Emmanuel Boateng to finish but that was ruled offside.
Gideon Mensah put in a lovely cross but Andre Ayew’s header over the goals on 60 minutes. A minute later it was Andre Ayew again and this time his free-kick sailed over.
The 55 minute would come along with a Ghanaian penalty. Sao Tome goalkeeper’s fouled Boateng inside the area and Jordan Ayew stepped up to score the spot-kick for 1-0.
Hot new kid Mohammed Kudus was the first sub as he came on for Emmanuel Boateng. Later on 72 minute was a special moment for Christopher Antwi-Adjei to make his debut in place of Samuel Owusu.
James Kwesi Appiah’s final change was Joseph Attameh coming in for Iddrissu Baba close to full time. The Black Stars held on for the maximum points and rose to the top of Group C.
How Ghana lined-up:
Ofori, Yiadom, Mensah, Aidoo, Nuhu, Baba (Atameh) , A. Ayew, Partey, Owusu (Kudus), J. Ayew, Boatend (Antwi-Adjei).
Ghana’s next AFCON 2021 qualifier will be against Sudan at home on 31 August 2020.
