Lampard defends squad selection in shock West Ham loss

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has defended his selection on Saturday's 1-0 home loss to West Ham in the English Premier League.

The former midfielder's selection came under scrutiny, having dropped the likes of N'Golo Kante, Willian, and Cezar Azpilicueta.

Lampard also missed the services of top scorer Tammy Abraham, who was injured in the Champions League clash against Valencia in midweek.

However, speaking after the match, Lampard said he made decisions he deemed right for the team, as some players needed to rest as a busy schedule looms.

"Tammy was enforced and he’s been going well, but at the same time, I have to think about the squad and about the course of the season. When we have a very taxing game where we give everything physically, arrive back late, I have to think about how fresh we can be for the game ahead," he said.

"It also gives me a look at how we are generally because we’re not going to get through the season with the same 11 players, so those are the things for me to look at,"

"I think the team we had out there for sure had the quality to go out there and win this game. The fact we performed below par is the reason that we didn’t,"

"I do believe in the squad and I think we’ve shown some great stuff this season. I’ve not had to say many times we were below par,"

This was Chelsea's second consecutive loss in the Premier League, having gone down 2-1 away to Manchester City last week.

The loss means the Blues remain rooted on fourth spot on 26 points, 14 off league leaders Liverpool, who are on 40.
