Throwing in the towel? Beaten Guardiola unsure of catching up with runaway leaders Liverpool

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and team are not ready to throw in the towel yet in their quest to defend the Premier League title, but the widening gap between them and leaders Liverpool is worrying.

The defending champions suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of City rivals Manchester United on Saturday evening, which saw Liverpool extend their lead over Guardiola's men to 14 points.

Speaking after the match at the Etihad, Guardiola indicated they will not give up yet, but in case they won't manage this campaign, then they will try against next season.

“We have to continue,” he said. “If we are not able to (catch Liverpool), then we want to try next season,"

"Sometimes you don't win, the others are better, and you lose. The normal thing is not winning all the leagues and trophies,"

“Sometimes you lose. The important thing is to not give up. In all the games we have played this season, we have played how I want us to play. When we struggle – OK - but it’s part of the process, maybe next season we will be better.”

The Spaniard admitted there were some issues concerning counter-attacks, but said he was pleased with the way his team performed overall despite the loss.

“I like my team how they play,” said Pep. “We conceded a little bit more than the last few years against United,"

City's attention will now shift to the Champions League in midweek, where they play away to Dinamo Zagreb in a dead rubber tie.
