Aston Villa 2-3 Tottenham: Son double lifts Spurs into fifth place

Tottenham Hotspurs needed an injury-time winner from forward Heung-min Son to register a narrow 3-2 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Sunday evening.

Veteran keeper Pepe Reina brilliance in the Villa posts was finally broken by Son in the 93rd minute after an error by Bjorn Engels allowed the South Korean to ghost behind him and curl in a neat finish.

Aston Villa were the first on the mark through defender Toby Alderweireld own goal in the ninth minute. Alderweired made amends in the 27th minute after he rifled in from close range to level the scores.

Engels, who had an interesting afternoon, fouled new signing Steven Bergwijn and Son stepped up and made no mistake from the spot.

Engels error

In the 53rd, a busy Engels was at the right place as Jack Grealish corner drifted into the six-yard box. He rose over Alderweireld to head home the equaliser.

Villa looked like they had gotten an important point off Spurs but Engels failed to deal with a simple ball. Son, with his trademark predatory skills, was lurking in his shadows and slid the ball past a brilliant Reina.

Tottenham rise to fifth on the log table and are now knocking on Champions League automatic qualification spot as Villa remain in the danger zone
