The Democratic Republic of Congo star Giannelli Imbula is on the verge of sealing a move to Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow from Stoke City.
According to football transfer news site Foot Mercato, Stoke are willing to let go of the defensive midfielder who has been at Serie A side Lecce on loan. Imbula has failed to make an impact in Italy playing only three times for Lecce.
The former Olympique de Marseille player wants to move to Russia in search of more playing time and stability after spending the last four seasons in four different clubs.
Four clubs in four years
The Belgian-born Congolese international arrived at Stoke City in 2016 and played 26 times scoring twice before being shipped out to Toulouse on loan in 2017. In 2018, he ended up at Rayo Vallecano eventually ending up in Lecce in 2019.
Giannelli Imbula, who is sorely lacking in playing time this season with Lecce, could eventually be loaned by Stoke City to Lokomotiv Moscow.
Rejected call up
The 27-year-old was born in Belgium to Congolese parents but raised in France, making him eligible for any of these three countries. In 2013, he received a call up from France under-21 team to compete in the Toulon Tournament. In October 2015, however, Imbula publicly expressed his desire to play for the Belgium national team.
Imbula was called up to the DR Congo national team squad to face Tanzania on 14 March 2018, but rejected the call-up. A year later, he finally agreed to don the Congolese shirt but his debt was never to be due to delayed international clearance. He finally made his debut for The Leopards in a 0-0 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification tie with Gabon on 14 November 2019.
