Liverpool's reign as European champions came to an end in the most dramatic fashion after suffering a 3-2 loss (4-2) on aggregate to Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Liverpool came into the tie having lost 1-0 back in Spain three weeks ago and needed to overcome the deficit. Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring for the Reds in the first half, the only goal that was scored in normal time, forcing the tie to go for extra time. At the start of the first 15 minutes, Roberto Firmino gave Jurgen Klopp's men the lead with a brilliant strike. However, Adrian made two mistakes that saw Atletico secure a victory thanks to Marcos Llorente's brace with Morata netting the winner in the 120th minute.
That ended Liverpool's run of 42 games unbeaten at Anfield as Madrid advanced to the last 8 of the Champions League.
Liverpool had two corners in quick succession. The second caused most problems as Mane headed Robertson's cross towards goal, but it hit Lodi's head, then hit the hand of Felipe, but he was far too close to the ball, and he knew nothing of it. VAR looked at it, but very briefly. No penalty.
With just two minutes remaining to half time, Liverpool got the opener and the tie was level. It was that man Wijnaldum again with a crucial European goal. Salah fed Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right, at the byline, and his hopeful cross met Wijnaldum unmarked around 10 yards out. The Dutchman had a lot to do, but his perfect header into the ground beat Oblak at his right-hand post.
In the extra time, Liverpool took the lead through Firmino. Gini Wijnaldum deserved a huge amount of credit here, bursting past Lodi on the right before crossing from deep. Firmino was free, headed into the ground and off the post, but he reacted well to the rebound, stuck a leg out, and saw the ball fly into the far corner.
Atletico capitalized on an Adrian error! Anfield was completely silenced!!. Trent played the ball back to him, but his kick was miscued and straight to Joao Felix 50 yards out. He rolled Llorente in, 25 yards out, and he had so much to do. He took a shot low for the bottom right corner, Adrian slightly slipped in diving to it, and it finds the far corner.
In the 105th minute, Atletico scored out of nothing. And there will be question marks over Adrian again, but this was also brilliant from Llorente the sub. He found himself 20 yards out, with both Liverpool center-backs in front of him, and found a gap to curl into the near post past Adrian from the edge of the box, and Atletico's players and staff went absolutely wild.
With Liverpool high up the pitch, Morata played a one-two with Llorente on halfway, and raced through on goal, onside. Morata took a shot in the box, around 15 yards out, and beat Adrian low at his near post. Adrian put a leg out, but didn't get there.
