Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Ismail Watenga is on the verge of joining South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, Uganda media reports.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been without a club after leaving Uganda Premier League side Vipers SC for a failed move to an Ethiopian top division club.
The highly-rated custodian has now set his focus to joining his compatriot and Cranes captain Dennis Onyango at the Premier Soccer League defending champions Sundowns.
Ugandan football news website Kawowo Sports reports that Watenga will join the former CAF Champions League champions but will be shipped out to another South African side on loan as there are enough quality keepers at the club at the moment.
“The deal is as good as done but he will be loaned out to gain playing time in one of the clubs in South Africa next season,” Kawowo Sports quoted an anonymous source.
If the deal goes through, Watenga will be the third Ugandan keeper to grace PSL after celebrated Onyango and Posnent Omwony.
