🇳🇬 Explained: How Nigerian midfielder Okocha became first ‘most expensive’ African player

Former Nigerian ace Daniel Amokachi believes Jay-Jay Okocha earned a move to Paris Saint-Germain due to his impressive performance during the 1998 World Cup.

Okocha helped the Nigerian national team to reach the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup held in France. The-46-year-old won the hearts of many despite his side suffering a 4-1 loss to Denmark. Due to his impressive performance, Okocha was spotted by PSG and the Ligue 1 giants snatched him from Fenerbahce for then African record of $27 million.

"France 98 was probably Jay Jay’s ( Okocha ) best world cup tournament; that’s why he was able to make that move to Paris Saint-Germain, He played some real sexy football," he said as quoted by the brila.net.

Amokachi believes Okocha could have gone far in the tournament but the team was let down the poor technical crew.

"Coaching was our biggest problem and the main reason we failed," he said.
