Rashid Toha has explained that prospect of playing regular football at the international stage played a role in switching his allegiance from Uganda to South Sudan.

The Vipers SC centre back announced that he will be representing South Sudan after he qualifies through the maternal grandmother.

He had been previously been called up Uganda Under 23 squad and senior regional sides but never made it to the final squads.

“I had to make that decision, I was being called up for regional tours and U23 games but missed out on the starting team on several occasions which made me believe that I can’t play for the senior team,” Toha told Football256.

The lanky defender added that he made the decision to switch nationalities after deliberations with the South Sudanese national team coach.

“I had discussions with the national team coach of South Sudan and he is ready to give me a chance to prove myself, if it fails then I will regret but if it’s positive then I will also be thankful for the decision.”

Toha revealed that the South Sudan FA had been inviting him but he turned down with hope of donning Ugandan national team colours.

“To be honest the South Sudan FA has been chasing after me for the last three years and I have been turning it down because I thought I will be of help for the national team of Uganda which wasn’t the case,” he added.

The former Onduparaka man was part of the victorious Vipers SC squad that won this season's Uganda Premier League after the season was ended.

Vipers were crowned league champions after FUFA aborted the league due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
