Zamalek president Mortada Mansour has urged the Egyptian FA to cancel the Egyptian Premier League due to the rising number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country.
Mansour said that the Egypt FA has to put the safety of the players first since there's no indication that the spread of the virus will be contained any time soon.
“I can assure you that the Egyptian Premier League will be permanently suspended,” Mansour told Zamalek TV.
“I’m not saying that so that Al Ahly don’t lift the title, but for the protection and safety of everyone.
“We all saw what happened to Zamalek’s basketball player Shaaban Abdelwahab who tested positive and also what happened at Wadi Degla. There’s also a player in Al Ahly’s swimming team that was diagnosed, so how do you expect the league to return."
The Egyptian government, however, is expected to ease the lockdown measures from next week after tighter measures had been put in place during the Eid week.
The disease has not spared the sports people as Zamalek basketball Shaaban Abdelwahab and Wadi Degla youth coach contracted the highly contagious disease.
Zamalek were fourth on the league table with 28 points and with two games in hand before the league’s suspension.
