Benfica players injured as fans attack team bus

On Thursday evening, Benfica bus was attacked by their fans after the team settled for a goalless draw with Tondela. 

Benfica failed to capitalize on Porto's defeat to Famalicao as they dropped two points in their first match back in Primeira Liga action after the break. The draw saw Porto and Benfica level on 60 points with nine games to go. 

Fans had gathered outside the stadium of the reigning champions after being blocked from entering the ground for their own safety, but the evening ended in two players being taken to hospital.

Germany international and former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl and Serbia international Andrija Zivkovic were hit with shrapnel after the vehicle were in was stoned, and they were both treated as a precaution.

"Benfica denounce the criminal stoning the bus of its players was victim to," the club's statement read.

"We guarantee total collaboration with authorities to whom we appeal for the greatest effort to be made in identifying the offenders responsible for these criminal acts."
