Shakhtar 4-1 Basel: Easy win for Ukrainian giants as they book a semi final date with Inter

Shakhtar Donetsk humbled FC Basel 4-1 in a UEFA Europa League quarterfinal game played on Tuesday night.

With the winner of the match setting up a semifinal date with Inter Milan, Shakhtar didn’t waste any time in stamping their authority. 37 seconds into the game, Júnior Moraes put his side into the lead with a header from a corner kick taken by Marlos.

Junior Moraes goal was his 25th in all competitions this season for his club, including four in his last three outings. Shakhtar had never lost when he has found the net this season.

The dominance by the Ukraine giants saw them for another 20 minutes to double their lead. It was another Brazilian in Taison who found the back of the net for Shakhtar; this time finishing off a perfect pass across the box from Marlos.

Eight minutes later the Swiss side had their goalkeeper Nikolic to thank after he denied Junior Moraes inside the box; the keeper denying the Brazilian who had whipped in a beautiful shot outside the box only for the keeper to thwart the danger.

Marcos Antonio was to hit the woodwork for Shakhtar with Moraes picking up the rebound but he had his shot blocked by Nikolic as the game went to the break with the Ukraine side having a 2-0 lead.

Basel thought they had won a penalty in the 62nd minute after Arthur Cabral was brought down in the opposition box. The referee after a consultation refused to give a penalty with the player booked for stimulation.

Cabral however almost redeemed himself immediately after his chipped ball just went wide after a frantic sequence that saw the keeper out of position. VAR Was called into action in the 67th minute when a Shakhtar defender seemed to have handled the ball but there was no penalty given.

Shakhtar was to wait until in the 74th minute to get their third goal after Taison had been brought down inside the box and the ref has given a penalty; up stepped Alan Patrick to extend his side’s lead. Dodo was to score Shakhtar fourth two minutes from time and after review from the VAR, the goal stood. Van Wolfswinkel pulled a goal back for Basel deep in stoppage time but it did less in changing the fortunes of the game.
