🪐 Our big five fixtures to watch from the top five European leagues this weekend

All five top European Leagues will be in full swing this weekend as 2020-21 gets properly underway.

Here are the matches we won't be missing.

🦁 Dortmund vs Mönchengladbach

It's the Borussen derby in Germany between two sides that aren't too far apart geographically and only four points separating Dortmund in 2nd and Mönchengladbach in 4th last season. The visitors have lost all of their last six Bundesliga away games vs Dortmund, losing by an average margin of 2.80 goals across the last five. Curiously, going back to 2015, each of Dortmund’s last five openers to a home league campaign has yielded victory with an average margin of exactly 2.80 goals. Erling Håland might well be ready to pick up where he left off last season.

🐆 Nice vs PSG

Things have been utterly chaotic for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 so far this term. Neymar, Leandro Paredes, Abdou Diallo & Layvin Kurzawa will all be absent for the trip to Nice through suspension; the quartet was involved in a mass brawl at the end PSG's last match, an ill-tempered 1-0 win over Metz courtesy of a 93rd-minute Julian Draxler goal. That slender triumph halted a run of three consecutive 1-0 losses for the Parisians, including their Champions League final defeat. Nice, managed by Patrick Vieira, will pose yet another test for a depleted PSG side. This should be spicy at the very least.

🦏 Chelsea vs Liverpool

There's no doubt that these sides share some history, and a new chapter might be emerging with Chelsea's big-spending ways ramping up the expectations of Frank Lampard's young squad. Liverpool opened up their title defence with a thrilling 4-3 win over promoted Leeds on the but that result extends an unwanted barren run of clean sheets for Klopp's champions, they've only kept one shutout in their last nine competitive matches away from Anfield.

If the Ghost Goal match from 2005 and other epic instalments of this rivalry is anything to go by, Sunday should deliver yet another gem of a football match.

🐘 Sociedad vs Real Madrid

The Anoeta won't be full of supporters but there will certainly be a sky-blue and white wall awaiting Real Madrid on matchday 1. The hosts will have to contend without last season's star midfield playmaker, Martin Ødegaard, who's now back at his parent club and in with a shot of making his second Real Madrid debut on Sunday for the defending Spanish champions.

🐃 Juventus vs Sampdoria

All eyes will be on Italian legend Andrea Pirlo as he stands in the Juventus dugout as their boss for the first time. Juve should beat Sampdoria comfortably, but the real source of fascination will be Pirlo and his new midfield maestro Arthur, signed from Barcelona in the summer.
