🇿🇦 Benni McCarthy: A South African great

Benni McCarthy is one of South Africa's favourite sons.

The ex-Ajax, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn, West Ham & Orlando Pirates striker scored 31 goals for Bafana Bafana in 80 international caps, an all-time record that stands to this day. Benni made his debut for South Africa in 1997 as a teenager under legendary manager Clive Barker, with rich success following him on his European journey.

Goal-scorer and lethal finisher supreme, Benni McCarthy was a player of undoubted pedigree at the highest level. Benni won league titles in The Netherlands and Portugal before becoming the first and only South African to lift European club football's biggest prize of all.

FC Porto were shock winners of the Champions League in 2004 and McCarthy was one of Jose Mourinho's most trusted soldiers during the battle that season. McCarthy excelled in the Premier League too, scoring 18 goals in the 2006-07 season for Blackburn Rovers and ending as the second-top scorer in the division, behind only Didier Drogba who scored 20 that term. Many South Africans have achieved great things in European club football but McCarthy stands alone as the only Bafana man to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
