Aston Villa yet to open talks with Chelsea over permanent transfer for Ross Barkley

Aston Villa have not approached Chelsea with regards to a permanent transfer for Ross Barkley according to Dean Smith, Birmingham Live reported.

Barkley has immediately adapted to life at Villa Park since completing a season-long loan move on the transfer deadline day.

The 26-year-old has scored two goals in four appearances so far and this could potentially lead to Dean Smith aiming for a permanent deal but that is dependant on Chelsea boss Frank Lampard.

"It's nothing that has been talked about, our discussions were only for the end of the season," Smith told Sky Sports.

"He has made a big impact, even just in the dressing room," said Smith. "That fact that we have been able to entice that calibre of player into the club has gone down well in the dressing room, with our staff and fans as well.

"He is a top player who has been in and amongst the Champions League in the last three or four years and has been a regular starter for England. His job now is to do well with Villa."

Barkley's next aim will be to catch the attention of England boss, Gareth Southgate, following his last appearance in October 2019.

"I'm sure Gareth Southgate will be watching and will be quite pleased he is playing regularly in the Premier League," added Smith.

"That is what he felt he needed to do to get re-noticed. We are giving him the platform to do that."
