Liverpool win away to Ajax; Lukaku's brace rescues point for Inter and Atalanta can't stop scoring

Liverpool recorded a morale-boosting 1-0 win away to Ajax on Wednesday night in their Champions  League opener.

The Reds benefited from Nicolas Tagliafico's own goal on the 35th minute, with the hosts unable to break them down.

With a number of injuries to his starting team, coach Jurgen  Klopp named 19-year-old Curtis Jones in the starting lineup,  with  Fabinho partnering Joe Gomez in defense.

The match lacked real action in the opening half-hour with few clear chances, until Tagliafico conceded an own goal.

Klopp's men then came close to adding a second on the 40th minute after a pass landed at the feet of Mohamed Salah in the middle of the box, but his effort was superbly blocked by a defender.

Dusan Tadic then missed a good chance to pull Ajax level just before the break after receiving an inch-perfect cross in the box,  but his header went above the bar as Liverpool led 1-0 at the break.

The second half was a copy of the first, only that time the first chance fell to the host.

Davy Klaassen produced a great touch from just outside the box and unleashed a ferocious shot,  but it unluckily rattled the right post.

Ajax then thought they had gotten a chance to equalize form the spot after  Trent Alexander-Arnold handled the ball inside the box, but the referee, after consulting the VAR, decided the incident was not a penalty.

Elsewhere, Romelu Lukaku scored a brace as Inter  Milan settled to a 2-2 draw at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Belgian opened the scores for the  Italians four minutes after the restart, but Ramy Bensebaini equalized for the Germans from the spot in the  63rd minute.

They then took the lead through Jonas Hofmann with six minutes to go, only for Lukaku to cancel it out on the 90th  minute to ensure they share the spoils.
