Alcantara Sr reveals how PSG initially wanted Thiago but signed his brother Rafinha

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara's father has revealed that Pari Saint-Germain were on the verge signing him in the summer but ended up with his brother Rafinha's signature.

Thiago completed a much-anticipated move to the Reds from Bayern Munich while Rafinha signed with PSG from Barcelona respectively.

The brothers kickstarted their careers at Barcelona until Thiago emerged on the radar of Bayern and signed in the summer of 2013.

In the process, Rafinha registered 90 appearances for the La Liga outfit while also being shipped out on loan to Celta Vigo and Serie A side Inter Milan.

The father, Mazinho Alcantara in an interview with France Football, revealed that PSG sporting director Leonardo was eager to sign Thiago and was pushing for the move but was not made aware that he would be making the move to England.

“I had already spoken with Leonardo a while ago, but it was for Thiago," Mazinho said.

"Leonardo wanted to sign him for Paris Saint Germain, but Thiago had already found an agreement with Liverpool.

"We then spoke about Rafa but he wasn’t part of Leonardo’s plans at that moment. I think that he must have thought about it, that he realised the nature of the opportunity and that it would be a coup to sign him.

"When he began talks again, Leonardo had changed his mind. And everything accelerated on [deadline] day.

"It was on Monday that we had to work hard to convince both clubs. We were scared, but thank God, five or six hours before the deadline, we found an agreement.

"Leonardo wanted Thiago, he got Rafinha. And for Rafa, it was a dream to join such a club.”
