Blow for Dortmund as Matt Hummels is ruled out of Club Brugge clash

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund has received a blow with the news that defender Matt Hummels will be out of their Champions League clash against Club Brugge.

Confirming the news was Dortmund manager Lucien Favre who said while the player will sit out of the Wednesday clash, they are hoping that he can be fit when they face arch-rivals Bayern Munich on Saturday in their next Bundesliga game.

“Unfortunately Mats Hummels will not be available tomorrow. We are hoping that he’ll be fully fit for Saturday [vs Bayern Munich],” said Favre in his pre-match press conference.

“We only have one fit central defender who is used to playing in back four, so we’ll have to see how we set up defensively tomorrow,” Favre said.

The injury will come as a blow for Dortmund who has three points from a possible six in their two Champions League fixtures. The team lost 3-1 to Lazio in their opening game but recovered to record a 2-0 win over Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg in their second game.

With just one central defender fit enough to play, we could see Favre revert back to a three-man defence which could include Łukasz Piszczek and midfielder Thomas Delaney alongside Manuel Akanji.
