Celta Vigo on the verge of signing Mario Mandžukić

Laliga side Celta Vigo is on the verge of signing Croatia striker Mario Mandžukić.

Spanish portal Marca reports that struggling Vigo is in advance talks with the striker who has been out of action for the past six months.

Apart from Mandzukic, the club is negotiating the deal alongside the potential managerial appointment of Eduardo Coudet, who is in line to replace the sacked Óscar García.

It won’t be a new ground for the striker who was in the books of Atletico Madrid previously but went to Qatar eleven months before returning to Europe this past summer.

Celta Vigo wants a striker who can share the scoring responsibilities with Iago Aspas and the deal comes as a surprise after the club announced a month ago that they were stretched financially as they failed to get their targets in the just-closed window.

The 34-year-old spent the first six years of his professional career in his native Croatia before joining German outfit Wolfsburg in 2010, staying for two years. He then spent a further two with Bayern before a season with Atleti, then signed for Juve where he played four seasons. He played just five league games in Qatar.

His experience with the national team will come in handy having represented Croatia as Euro 2012, the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup; the player scoring 33 goals in 89 appearances for his country.

At club level, he has scored 197 goals in 497 games and is expected to be a boost for Celta who are fourth from bottom in the Laliga table.
