Leeds 0-0 Arsenal: Gunners held as Pepe sees red

Arsenal were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Leeds United in a Premier League match played on Sunday night.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were the better team through the match, hitting the woodwork three times and coming close on a number of occasions.

Mikel Arteta's team seemed off the pace for long periods and were reduced to 10 men after Nicolas Pepe was shown a red card in the second period.

The Gunners were first to threaten as Dani Ceballos unleashed a shot from 25 yards out in the 16th minute, but it went inches wide.

They almost got lucky in the 22nd minute as the ball went off the crossbar after Leeds somehow made a mess of a weak Pepe cross.

Patrick Bamford then came closest to giving the hosts the lead after hammering a powerful first-time shot from close range, sending the ball towards the bottom left corner, but Bernd Leno stopped it with a miraculous save.

The match went into the break with both teams tied at 0-0, with the hosts enjoying superior possession.

The second period was dramatic as the Gunners were reduced to 10 men five minutes after the restart after Pepe was shown a straight red card for headbutting Ezgjan Alioski.

Leeds failed to make the advantage count, even though they went all out in search of a goal.

They had a number of chances to finish off the game, which turned into an end-to-end affair in the latter stages.

Bamford was unlucky not to get the winner in the 87th minute as his effort rebounded off the upright and  Arsenal survived again.

In the end, they settled for a scoreless score which did little to improve their standings.

The  Gunners are currently11th on 13 points, two ahead of Leeds, who are two places below them with 11 points.
