Jonathan Burkardt and Alexander Hack had given Mainza a 2-0 lead at half time but Robert Lewandowski had other plans in the second half; the Polish striker reducing the arrears at the start of the second half before Leroy Sané equalized with a scorcher from 20 meters. Lewandowski was to bag another two goals after Niklas Sule had given Bayern the lead.
In other matches, Dortmund saw off Wolfsburg 2-0 thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Manuel Akanji.
In Spain, Luis Suarez scored a late goal as Atletico Madrid recorded a 2-1 win over Alaves to move on top of the Laliga standings.
In a drama-filled day in the Laliga, Athletic Bilbao sacked their coach Gaizka Garitano hours after they beat Elche 1-0.
