Liverpool eased past Aston Villa in a 4-1 win, while Wolves held on to a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace to move on to the FA Cup third round.
Villa were forced to field a mixture of their Under 23s and 18s squads after the entire first team, including coaches, had to go into self-isolation due to a Covid outbreak. The hosts named a matchday squad completely without first-team experience as 11 debutants kicked off against a strong line-up from the Premier League champions.
Sadio Mane put Liverpool in front after three minutes and the visitors were expected to kick on, but it was not to be.
Despite seeing like 17 percent possession in the first half, Aston Villa drew level before the breakthrough Louie Barry, a former Barcelona academy member, who muscles out the Liverpool defense to run through and score.
It was dreamland for Villa and more than they, or many others, expected.
Liverpool’s experience, and Villa’s lack of fitness, eventually showed with three goals inside five second-half minutes, from Gini Wijnaldum, Mane, and Mohamed Salah around the hour mark to put the tie to bed.
In the other game:
In a Wolves-dominated first half, winger Adama Traore chopped past Eberechi Eze far too easily.
With left-back and opposite man Patrick van Aanholt nowhere to be seen, Traore smashed a superb left-footed effort past Jack Butland for his first goal of the season.
