Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio says he was disappointed after the Los Blancos were knocked out of the 2020 Spanish Supercup by Athletic Bilbao.
Bilbao beat holders Madrid 2-1 on Thursday evening to book a final date against Spanish giants Barcelona. Raúl García scored a brace for the Los Blancos before Karim Benzema reduced the deficit in the second half a goal that turned out to be a consolation for the holders.
Speaking to the media after the game, Asensio admitted the team was frustrated by the exit while hailing their opponents.
"They started very well and made it hard for us, especially at the beginning. We went behind and it was difficult. In the end, we had chances to get back into it. We’re sad and upset because we wanted to reach the final, but that’s football and we must move on,” said Asensio, trying not to make a big deal after the defeat," he said after the game.
"We’re angry and upset that we couldn’t get to the final, but we now have other goals and have to focus on them. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves and we have to focus on what’s next," he insisted.
Zinedine Zidane's men will take on Alcoyano on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey's round of 32.
