Atletico Madrid boosted their chances of winning the Laliga title this season by beating Real Sociedad 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Suarez had a perfect chance of breaking the deadlock inside the five minutes after going four games without a goal but with just the keeper to beat, the Uruguayan attempted acrobatic strike blazed over the bar.
Llorente was the next to waste a chance as he got behind the Sociedad defense, but his left-footed effort was stopped by Remiro; the striker having had Suarez as a helper in a better position prior to the effort.
After knocking for some time, the goal was however to come in the 15th minute with Llorente setting up Carrasco who chested the ball with one touch before shooting it through the goalkeeper's legs with the other in what was a deserved lead. Atleti then doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Suarez drove at the opposition defence before slipping the ball to Correa who made no mistake; the home side racing to a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Sociedad came a different team and threatened to turntables for the better part of the half with Jan Oblak forced to a series of good saves. Their efforts were to pay in the 81st minute as Zubeldia tucked the ball away from close range to set up a tense finish for Atletico but the hosts were able to hold on to boost their title chances.
With the win, Atleti increased their points at the top of Laliga log to 80 points, four points above second-placed Barcelona, and five above Real Madrid who have played a game less.
