Southampton is not keen on letting their captain James Ward-Prowse join Aston Villa.
There had been reports that Villa has enquired about the England international as they seek to find a replacement for Ross Barkley who will be returning to his parent club Chelsea in the summer.
Daily Mail however reports that the Saints have rebuffed Villa and will not be persuaded to change their stance on a player they consider as a key figure in the team.
Villa has turned their attention on the 26-year-old central midfielder after reportedly beating Arsenal to Norwich star Emiliano Buendia.
A move for Prowse won’t come cheaply though for Villa with the player has signed a five-year contract last summer with the club he joined as a child; the midfielder making over 300 appearances for Southampton since emerging from their youth ranks.
The midfielders' importance for the Saints was exhibited this season where he played in every single minute of their Premier League season for the second campaign running and enjoying his best season in front of goal during 2020/21, scoring nine times and setting up eight more goals.
The England midfielder, who came on in his country's first Euro 2020 warm-up match against Austria on Wednesday, was left out of the 26-man squad but was named by manager Gareth Southgate as one of the six backup players.
