🏆 EURO 2020: Netherlands survive late Ukraine scare to secure first win in dramatic fashion

Denzel Dumfries scored a later winner as Netherlands survived a scare to beat Ukraine 3-2 in their EURO 2020 Group C opener on Sunday.

The Dutch scored two quick goals in the second half through Georginio Wijnaldum and Wout Weghorst, before similar strikers from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yeremchuk.

The match got off to a lightning start with both teams creating goal-scoring chances just seconds apart.

First Andriy Yarmolenko got into the Dutch box on the right and pulled it across for Yaremchuk, who couldn't get a shot away, but found Zubkov who perhaps should have.

The Netherlands made a quick break through Depay, who skipped out of his own half and past Zabernyi into space, and pulled a low save out of Buschan when he should have beaten him.

Buschan then made another stunning save to deny the Dutch in the sixth minute after they managed to work the ball to the edge of the box and Wijnaldum hooked it right to an unmarked Dumfries and forced the keeper into a wonderful save.

The Ukrainians had another chance to take the lead in the 10th minute when Malinovskyi strode forward with the Netherlands defense backing off and had a go from 25 yards but it was blocked.

The Netherlands' tempo dropped quite a bit by the 20th minute, but they still pushed their opponents with some neat passes.

Bushchan, who was busier of the two keepers, was again called into action in the 27th minute as he managed to dive at the feet of Weghorst in the box when the big striker found space and should have put the Netherlands ahead.

Wijnaldum was once again denied by the brilliant Bachchan in the 39th minute after unleashing a rocket from the edge of the box as the match went into the break with no goal.

The Netherlands finally got their goal seven minutes after the restart, and after such good work from Bushchan all night, he was partly at fault.

Yet another low cross was allowed into the box from Dumfries on the right and was palmed away by the diving goalkeeper, but the loose ball could only go as far as Wijnaldum, who easily found the back of the net.

One became two in six minutes, and it was Dumfries making it again, pressuring Mykolenko on his way into the box, and the loose ball falling for Weghorst this time, with the forward firing at Bushchan who could only divert it into the top corner.

Ukraine then pulled one back in the 75th minute and it was a spectacular strike from Yormolenko, who curved a beautiful strike from the edge of the box.

Then four minutes later, the Ukrainians pulled level as Yaremchuk guided a free-kick ball past Stekelenburg

The hosts though restored their lead with five minutes to go as they came out to Ake and he crossed to the far post where Dumfries got to the ball ahead of Zinchenko to make it 3-2.

They held on to pick maximum points and mark their return to the tournament with a key victory.
