COPA America: Messi blames the pitch in Chile draw

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has blamed the pitch following their opening day draw against Chile in the COPA America.

Messi gave his country the lead with a sumptuous free-kick however after the strike the game got away from them and in an interview relayed by Diario AS the 33-year-old admitted that the condition of the field didn’t allow Argentina to see their game plan develop.

“When we were in advantage, we could not sustain the result, the playing field did not help us, and we lacked control of the ball and to play faster, which they did when they managed to draw level. I did not see the penalty, but clearly, it changed the game,” Messi said.

The Barcelona man further admitted that they will have to be at their best against Uruguay in their next match of the competition even though they needed to win the Chile game.

“We wanted to start winning; it was important to get the victory. We played against a very difficult opponent, and now we will do it against Uruguay, another challenging and even game," Messi added.

After the draw, Argentina finds itself in second place in Group B behind Paraguay who is the only country that got the win in the first round of fixtures as they defeated Bolivia.
