Villarreal have suffered a massive injury blow with midfielder Dani Parejo set to miss next month's UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea.
Chelsea will be up against Villarreal in the annual European domestic season curtain-raiser on August 11. This comes after the LaLiga side beat Manchester United in the final of the Europa League while Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy following a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League final.
Unai Emery's side will head to Belfast’s Windsor Park without their playmaking talisman who picked up a calf injury.
"After the tests carried out, it has been confirmed that the footballer Dani Parejo suffered muscle damage in the inner calf of his right leg during the friendly match played yesterday against Levante UD at the Ciudad Deportiva," a statement from Villarreal read.
"The recovery time will be subject to the evolution of the player."
Villarreal will then start their LaLiga 2021/22 campaign on August 16th at home against Granada.
