Jude Bellingham hits out at referee after 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich

Jude Bellingham has slammed referee Felix Zwayer following the controversial award of a penalty during Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich moved four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table in Germany with the victory, in a game fraught with incident.

Dortmund's credible penalty appeal was denied, while Mats Hummels was sanctioned for a harsh handball that allowed Robert Lewandowski to score the game-winning penalty.

Speaking after the match, Bellingham said:

“It wasn’t a penalty, [Mats Hummels] wasn’t looking at the ball, he’s fighting to get it. It hits him,” Bellingham claimed.

“You can look at a lot of the decisions in the game; you give a referee that has match-fixed before the biggest game in Germany, what do you expect?”

Zwayer was suspended from football for six months in 2005 after allegedly accepting a bribe - confirmation of the suspension did not arrive until a few years later, according to The Independent. Zwayer, along with several other officials, was sanctioned following an investigation by the German FA.

He has since established himself as one of Germany's top referees and is one of four officials to be granted UEFA Elite status.

Dortmund striker Erling Haaland used a thumb-down emoji to quote the announcement of Zwayer's appointment in a now-deleted tweet.

“I think it was a scandal when it comes to the referee,” Haaland said after the game.

“Clear penalty [on Reus in the first half]. I asked [the referee], ‘Why didn’t you just go and look?’- he said, ‘there’s no need’, like an arrogant... No, I have to calm down a little bit now.

“He was arrogant and I will not say more.”
