Belgium coach Roberto Martinez was full of praise for his goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois despite his grave blunder that saw Russia equalize before his side ran away 3-1 winners in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
The Red Devils opened the scoring early on in the game courtesy of a goal from on-loan Leicester City midfielder Yuri Tielemans but Courtois was at fault as he failed to clear the ball giving the ball away to Denis Cheryshev to net the equalizer. Hazard saved the custodian's blushes with a brace as Belgium began their qualifier campaign on a winning note. The error compounded a nightmare week for Courtois who was dropped by Zinedine Zidane upon his return.
Speaking in a press conference after the win over Russia, Martinez heaped praise on Courtois, "After that bloke you could see why Thibaut is the number one in the world. He played as if nothing had happened and remained icy calm. Impressive, the way he reacted after his mistake. Credits to Russia for that counter goal. At times they put a lot of pressure, so we made the wrong decision at the time."
