Belgium began the game on a high, opening the scoring just after 14 minutes when on-loan Leicester City midfielder Yuri Tielemans fired the hosts into the lead. Courtois, however, produced a howler two minutes later when he tried to dribble but gave the ball away to Denis Cheryshev to restore parity for Russia. Hazard ensured Belgium went to the break with the lead as he tucked away his penalty and scored in the 88th minute to secure three points for Russia.

In an interview to Radio Télévision Belge Francophone (RTBF), Hazard teased Courtois after his error in the game, "I think he’s looking at too many videos of me, he’s trying to dribble like me! But it’s not the same thing as he’s a bit taller, it’s a little more complicated. It will spend a little time on the internet and make a buzz!"
