Denis Onyango finally speaks out on the Tanzania defeat

For the first time since the infamous 3-0 defeat to Tanzania in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango has spoken out.

Onyango, who was on phone from his base in South Africa in an interview with Super FM says he and the Cranes were discouraged by the fans reaction in defeat to Tanzania.

“We felt let down by the fans’ reaction,” said Onyango. “I think fans must understand that football is never straight and we (Cranes) are not invincible,” he added.

“If giants like Germany, Brazil etc lose games, who are we? We have always thumped teams at Namboole. Does it that mean that they also fix games?”

The former African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) also supported the coaches for the decision to leave Murushid Jjuuko and Aucho Khalid on the bench.

“In Gabon, we missed their services because of suspension,” he explained. “So the coaches couldn’t risk and to me, they made the right decision,” he added.

Onyango also hinted that fans’ reaction did deflate the team ahead of the Afcon finals in Egypt but as a skipper and senior player, he has talked to players to keep their heads up if they are to achieve their first target at the finals.

It’s been a difficult few weeks for most players. But we remain focused and the target is to go beyond group stages in Egypt.

Away from the national team, Onyango blasted Mbarara City officials for suspending their goalkeeper Kimera for abysmal performance.

“It's not right at all,” he said in reference to suspension. “Just last month, I made a howler but the whole team, coaches and management stood with me,” he went on.

That’s what Kimera needs at the moment. He needs support and not ridicule. Actually, he should be the man in goal for next game to regain his confidence.

Since making the howler against Polokwane City, Onyango has been in goal for Sundowns and kept three clean sheets.
