REPOSTED; Harambee Stars Player Profile: Patrick Matasi

With Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne naming his 30-man provisional squad for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Egypt, Futaa looks at the profiles of the players that will represent Kenya in the continental showpiece.

Patrick Matasi (Goalkeeper)

Date of Birth: December 11, 1987

Current team: St. Georges, Ethiopia

Previous Clubs: West Kenya Sugar, AFC Leopards, Posta Rangers

Matasi or Otaso as he is commonly known by his peers will undoubtedly be Kenya’s first choice in the tournament that Kick Off in June.

Matasi first came into the limelight in 2011 when representing lower league side West Kenya Sugar FC in an FKL Cup (now Shield Cup) against Sofapaka FC at the Nyayo National Stadium. His saves and output in the game saw him roped by AFC Leopards.

At Leopards, he had to wait for his chance with the club having one Barbanas Tiema as their first-choice keeper. His debut came in an unfamiliar fashion when in a league game against Posta Rangers, Tiema was to pick an injury with the young stopper who had been named on the bench called to step up. He was never to look back again.

Matasi was to leave Leopards in 2015 for Posta Rangers where he spent another four years before his move to Tusker FC and then St Georges.

It was at Rangers that he earned his national team debut.  The then Stars head coach Stanley Okumbi decided to field the shot-stopper on March 23, 2017 in an international friendly match against Uganda in Machakos in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.

He was a key member of the Kenyan squad that won the year’s CECAFA tournament the same year as he saved three penalties against Zanzibar in the final to hand head coach Paul Put his maiden silverware.

His heroics saw him get roped by Tusker in June 2018 on a two-year deal at a time when Harambee Stars head coach Sebastien Migne had entrusted him with the task of being the main man between the sticks. His heroics in the doubleheader against Ethiopia in the AFCON Qualification process was to hand him a deal with St. Georges.
