Blues old boys reunion as Lampard & Terry face off in English Championship Playoff Final

16 May 2019, 08:55

Frank Lampard got the biggest feather in his young managerial cap so far by guiding his Derby County side past Leeds United to reach the Championship Playoff Final on May 27.

His side clawed back a 1-0 first leg deficit against Leeds United, under the tutelage of experienced Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa, to win 4-2 on the night at Elland Road and 4-3 on aggregate, and causing a massive upset in the process.

Lampard's Rams side went down by a goal last night, making their comeback all the more remarkable and continuing a recent trend of teams coming back from the dead in massive matches and high stakes scenarios. To claw back a 2-0 deficit away from home and end up winning the tie 4-2 will stand Derby County and Lampard in good stead ahead of the final, a match often billed as the most expensive game in football.

Lampard was always convinced that Jack Marriott would pop up with the winner and it was the 24-year-old Englishman that settled a pulsating tie in the 85th minute in front of a stunned Elland Road crowd.

There, Chelsea legend and the club's leading all-time scorer will face up to an old teammate and friend. Aston Villa's assistant head coach, John Terry, is a fabled figure in Chelsea folklore and often referred to as a "Captain. Leader. Legend" by those that follow the West London club. He led the club to numerous English and continental successes.

It's a massive encounter in prospect and these two friends will put that friendship on hold for 90 minutes and possibly more, with the aim of lifting their side into the promised land of the Premier League.

Lampard and Terry were both renowned for their fight and competitive spirit as players, and both tasted a wealth of success at Chelsea. Now that competitive spirit will be put to one of football's ultimate tests as they temporarily become enemies in the English Championship Playoff Final.
