Former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has stepped down as Spain head coach and his role with the national team has been taken by assistant coach Robert Moreno.

The Spaniard has left his role ‘due to the reasons which had prevented him from fulfilling his duties as normal since last March.’ Those reasons have not been clarified and the Spanish Football Federation requested that the coach’s privacy continue to be respected.

“Luis Enrique is not going to continue as coach,” the president of the Spanish FA Luis Rubiales confirmed.

“Robert as a coach will have the same length of contract that was signed before. He will be in charge of taking us to and making a good showing at Euro 2020,” he added while confirming Moreno’s appointment.

The 49-year-old had been in charge of Spain for just under a year after taking over ahead of last year's World Cup in Russia.
