19-year-old Dutch centre back Matthijs de Ligt has today completed a long-expected move to Juventus from Ajax.
What better time, then, to take a closer look at the teenage sensation who had Europe's heavyweight clubs tussling for his signature?

What's De Ligt's story so far?
Matthijs de Ligt is quite clearly a unique, once in a generation footballer. He was the youngest ever player to be named the captain of Ajax Amsterdam and was also the youngest player to make 100 appearances for the Dutch giants.
It's been a meteoric rise for the talented youngster, who led the Ajax side out against Tottenham in last season's Champions League semifinals, becoming the youngest player in history to do so in the process. De Ligt is also now a regular for The Netherlands, where he looks set to forge a formidable defensive partnership with Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk.
Playing style & strengths 🥊
De Ligt is exceptional in the air, making him a massive presence in aerial duels and a considerable threat from set-pieces when his side is on the attack. He's very much a ball-playing defender in the classic Dutch mould and he backs it up with a top-quality passing game. He's a commanding presence in the air and on the ground, and he's only getting better. What he lacks in experience he more than makes up for in confidence.
At 19, there are bound to be weaknesses in a centre back's game and De Ligt will have to work on his tackling, especially the timing of his tackles.
Matthijs de Ligt looks set to become a world-class player at Juventus and will most certainly learn a great deal alongside experienced Italian Giorgio Chiellini in Turin. We will be watching his development keenly.
