Manchester City begins title defence with a win over West Ham United

Manchester City started their title defence with a 5-0 win over West Ham United in a match staged at London Stadium on Saturday 10th.

Raheem Sterling without a doubt being the MOTM with his hat-trick, and a goal apiece for Jesus and Aguero. Brilliant from Pep Guardiola's men as they started their title defence in style.

The defending Champions had a brilliant start, seeing much of the possession in the opening exchanges and finally took their lead in the 25th minute through Gabriel Jesus. Walker made a run down the right, he overlapped Cresswell with such ease before getting to the byline and centered. It flicked off Diop, Jesus was there just behind him ahead of Balbuena, and the Brazilian got the slightest touch on it. It crept in at the near post.

Sterling goal

City were in full control and grabbed their second through Sterling. De Bruyne was in a central position, and his first touch was superb, taking Balbuena out of the game. He got to the edge, slipped it left for Sterling through on goal, and he made absolutely no mistake. Through Fabianski's legs and in.

Disallowed goal

Silva slipped in Sterling on the left, and he squared for Jesus to tap home from close range.  VAR was called into action for a potential offside on Sterling. It had a look with the 3D offside lines at Silva's slipped ball through to Sterling and it showed he was offside by a matter of millimeters.

Sterling brace

City had their third and it was a lovely goal, and second for Sterling. Mahrez dinked ball found him behind the line and he lobbed Fabianski from 12 yards but again VAR was called. After checking, it was extremely marginal, by a matter of millimeters again. But Sterling was just onside from Mahrez's delightful ball over the top of the defence and the goal was given.

A poor clearance from Fabianski saw the ball fall to Mahrez, whose lovely turn forced Diop to bring him down and referee pointed to the spot. Sterling wanted to take it but Aguero stepped up, his effort was saved by Fabianski. However, it had to be retaken because Declan Rice had encroached into the box.  Aguero was given another chance and he sent the keeper wrong way.

Sterling Hattrick

In the stoppage time, Sterling had his hattrick without the need of VAR. Mahrez rolled in Sterling into the box, and Fabianski made it easy for him with his positioning. He rolled it into the bottom right corner for 5-0!
