Revealed: Why Premier League denied Man City request for extra winners' medals

Manchester City's request for extra Premier League winners' medals was denied due to not meeting the requirements set out by the league.

After pipping Liverpool to the title by a point, the Blues had applied to the Premier League for additional medals after the team won the league for the second season on the bounce, but had their request turned down due to regulations.

Premier League rules state the champions will receive 40 commemorative medals to be distributed to players who have played five league games or more and then the additional medals are distributed to other players and staff as the club see fit.

City had 21 players who all automatically qualified for winners' medals having made more than five league appearances during the domestic treble-winning season meaning the club had an additional 19 medals to dish out.

The Premier League rules state additional medals will be presented with the consent of the board and will only be given if the total number of players who have made a minimum of five appearances in the league exceeds 39 - which in this instance it didn't with just 21 players fulfilling the criteria.
