The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and caretaker coach Joey Antipas offer reasons behind the latest squad list.

With the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers  18-man squad selection confirmed, several observers have been surprised with the omissions of players such as Knowledge Musona, Marvelous Nakamba, Goerge Chigova, and Ovidy Karuru.

Wile whispers say ZIFA have advised Antipas to exclude players that played central roles in the alleged player rebelling at AFCON 2019, ZIFA have denied the reports.

“ZIFA takes pride in the independence of the coach. The coach uses his discretion in the selection of the national team and ZIFA don’t interfere with the selection of the national team. We respect the coach’s decision,” said ZIFA’s Spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela.

Additionally, coach Antipas was also made available to describe his thinking behind the new-look squad that features Macclive Phiri, Tichaona Chipunza, Phenias Bamusi, and Clive Augusto.

“It is a balanced squad with a lot of youthful players which I believe need to be given a chance with the national team. We want to have a broad selection of players and this is their chance to prove they deserve to be in the team," Antipas explained.

The Warriors will meet Somalia in Dibouji on 5 September before hosting the return leg on the 8th in Bulawayo.
