Former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany believes Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world right now, following his stunning performances.
The Dutchman has been in imperious form for club and country from last season, helping Liverpool turn a porous defence into one of the best in Europe.
He led the side to the Champions League triumph, and came close to lifting the English Premier League, narrowly missing out as City lifted the title.
Speaking ahead of his testimonial match, Kompany highlighted the former Southampton's strengths while comparing him with some of the best defenders the Premier League has had.
"I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years," Kompany said ahead of the tie at Etihad.
"He's shown if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time. The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different setup. I’ll give him that one,"
Dijk moved from Southampton in the then world-record fee for a defender in January 2018 and has gone on to make a total of 78 appearances, scoring eight goals in the process.
