Kjetil Zachariassen has said Kotoko’s level was not fitting for the CAF Champions League.
The Norwegian coach’s statement comes straight after Sunday’s CAF Champions League exit. The Porcupine Warriors squandered a 2-0 first-leg win over Etoile du Sahel to lose 3-2 in Tunisia.
Kotoko’s lost meant relegation into the CAF Confederation Cup tournament. “The CAF Confederation Cup is our level at the moment, we are in the Confederation Cup, I think that's the right level for us," Zachariassen said via GhanaSoccerNet.
The former Ashanti Gold coach further called for the need to take a sensible and practical view. Zachariassen underlined his three months with the team as a limited period to be a high level for competing in the CAF Champions League.
"We’ve got to be realistic, we’ve got to be realistic because we have only worked together for 3 months,” he added.
Kotoko’s last CAF Champions League group stage appearance was in 2015. Last season’s Confederation run saw the Ghanaians finish third in Group C behind Nkana FC and Al-Hilal.
Kotoko's unsuccessful Group C run in 2019:
- Al-Hilal 1-0 Kotoko
- Kotoko 2-1 Zesco
- Nkana 3-1 Kotoko
- Kotoko 3-0 Nkana
- Kotoko 1-1 Al-Hilal
- Zesco 2-1 Kotoko.
Meanwhile, Kotoko will only find out their CAF Confederation Cup opponents later this week.
