We love and demand to see our favourite players in the national team, but when our wishes aren’t fulfilled, it is sometimes refreshing to see new names and faces in the Nigeria Super Eagles squad.
Gernot Rohr’s changes in the 25-man squad to face Brazil are as plenty as four. Additionally, his new call ups are much of a response to the long cries and questions on overlooking locally-based footballers.
Looks look at the four new names...
- Alhassan Ibrahim
Ibrahim is a 20-year-old midfielder at Akwa United. Kano is the place he calls home. His previous club are Wikki Tourists and finds himself in the Super Eagles squad after nine goals in 15 games. Ibrahim is also not new to international football after playing for Nigeria’s U20.
- Mikel Ndubusi Agu
Agu, a 26-year-old playing his football in Portugal. Central midfield is Agu’s position of choice at Vitória F.C. on loan from FC Porto.
The Benin City-born player has been at Porto since academy levels in 2009. Agu’s loan spells also included places such as Turkey and Belgium. His Vitória appearances in the Portuguese Premier this season stand at eight and include one assist.
- Sikiru Olatunbosun
Olatunbosun is another new face we could see in the Super Eagles attack. The 23-year-old from Lagos earned his call after seven goals for MFM FC. His previous clubs include Plateau and Menemen Spor (Turkey).
- Stephen Odey
Another MFM representative is Odey. Also, a striker, the 19-year-old’s breakthrough was scoring a hattrick against Lobi Stars in 2017. The Lagos-born player is also a two-time NPFL player of the month winner.
Nigeria take on Brazil this Sunday at 14:00 in Singapore.
