Strained finances will force the Warriors of Zimbabwe to sit out this week’s worldwide international friendlies.
Zimbabwe’s interim coach Joey Antipas has reacted to this week’s no-action situation. Antipas came out to the media to express an understanding position that will see his men remain inactive this week.
With Antipas having only taken charge of two games since his appointment, the man known as “Mafero” faces the disappointment of missing out on a chance to test his abroad-based options - particularly some of his uncapped British-born targets.
“It would have been a great idea to play a game or two this week,’’ Antipas told The Herald. “It would have been a great opportunity to assess the British-born players.”
“But, as you all know, the economy is bad and ZIFA are also struggling with financial constraints and it would have been a burden for them,” concluded the Chicken Inn coach.
While the locally-based squad will face Lesotho in a CHAN 2020 qualifier in Maseru on 18 October weekend, the Warriors’ next major challenge will be in November for a crunch AFCON 2021 Qualifier. The fixture will see Zimbabwe host Botswana on 11 November 2019.
