Zambia U-17 national team head coach Osward Mutapa has expressed happiness with the 2019 COSAFA U17 Championship triumph.
Mutapa alluded the triumph to the hard work put in during preparations. Mutapa described the outing as great and believes it gives an opportunity for young players to develop their skills.
“We are happy to be Champions. We did a lot, preparations were massive and it could be seen from the results that we have had," he said.
"The tournament was great and it’s always important to give opportunities to young boys to develop their skills and this is one of them. We saw even the Women’s Under-17 it’s an opportunity for Girls and Boys to develop their skills."
The young Copper Bullets beat Mozambique 2-0 to emerge victorious thanks to goals from Rickson Ng'ambi and Joseph Banda. Mutapa described the match as an even affair.
“The final was a great game. The first half was 50-50 but I again we had a chance to score in the first half but we didn’t," he said.
“In the second half we knew Mozambique had put in their all in the first half and there was no way they were going to challenge us in the second half. Our boys were physically very fit, you could tell from the way they played even when we were a man down we controlled the game and scored a second goal from there it was game over.”
Zambian forward Moses Mulenga was named as the Player of the Tournament with teammate Iford Mwale walking away with the Golden Glove. Rickson Ng'ambi together with Simon Cipriano from Mozambique and valdemiro Dominos from Angola shared the Golden Boot as joint top goalscorers with 5 goals each. Eswatini claimed the Fair Play prize.
